In this two-day hands-on workshop, you will work with the complete open-source analog IC design flow, from schematic simulation to layout, LVS, parasitic extraction, and post-layout verification. Using the IHP open PDK and the web-based BlueGarden EDA environment, you’ll build and validate a CMOS inverter and a ring oscillator with Xschem, ngspice, and KLayout. You’ll also get an overview of the global IC ecosystem and the role of open-source EDA alongside commercial tools. A live mixed-signal chip design demo rounds off the workshop.
This course is developed by Symbiotic EDA.

This two-day training course offers a hands-on introduction to open-source analog IC design, guiding participants through a full schematic-to-post-layout workflow. On Day 1, participants will learn how open-source IC design fits within the semiconductor ecosystem and explore PDKs. They will also characterise MOS devices and design and verify a CMOS inverter through DC,transient and PVT simulations. Day 2 focuses on physical implementation, including layout, DRC,LVS, parasitic extraction, post-layout simulation and reproducible design flows.

(June 2026) At the 33rd MIXDES conference in Poznań, Juan S. Moya presented “Broadening Participation in Open-Source Integrated Circuit Design and Fabrication Through IEEE Activities”. The paper highlights how open PDKs, open-source EDA flows, training programs, mentoring, and fabrication support are making realistic IC design accessible to more students, universities, and small research groups. Symbiotic EDA contributes to this broader effort through BlueGarden, its managed open-source IC design environment, which helps provide reproducible toolchains, PDK access, and practical design infrastructure for training and collaborative chip-design work. The initiatives presented show that open-source silicon needs more than tools alone: it requires reliable infrastructure, educational programs, funding, test hardware, and pathways from first designs to fabricated and measurable silicon.
On 21 May 2026, Symbiotic EDA participated in a microelectronics training session at the University of Aveiro in Portugal. Juan Sebastian Moya Baquero, representing INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory and Symbiotic EDA, delivered an invited talk and hands-on session on analog circuit layout design using open-source EDA tools and the IHP OpenPDK. The session formed part of the Microelectronics course in the Master’s in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering and was held at the invitation of Pedro Rito, Assistant Professor at the University of Aveiro. Students and teachers used BlueGarden, Symbiotic EDA’s open-source EDA design environment, during the practical session. The event saw strong participation from students, researchers, and professors from the University of Aveiro and external institutions.
(Nov 2025) The IEEE SSCS-EDS SEED Program sends experts to underserved global regions for two-week visits to assess semiconductor education and industry infrastructure, identify gaps, and produce reports guiding future IEEE investments.
In December 2025, Symbiotic EDA team member Dr. Juan Sebastian Moya-Baquero was selected for the Colombia student outreach program giving University-level workshop, and engagements at the University of Quindío.
